Clubs are important: Join or Die, on Netflix

We all enjoy the Woodfords Club or we wouldn’t be members. But do we think of the club as important? Social scientist Robert Putnam in Bowling Alone and other books has argued that social connections have been lost in recent decades, and that social clubs like ours are a foundation of a democratic civil society. The Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization and other civic groups screened the documentary Join or Die recently at Hill Arts. It presents Putnam’s research in a strong and accessible film, now available on Netflix. It’s a fascinating watch.
