Stephen Sent Off with Music and Humor
Steve Bither got the best send off we’ve ever seen on Thursday, April 10, at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Over 300 people participated.
Steve was a musician and humorist, so there was music by a jazz band who played with him frequently at the church, including former member Paul Aranson, as well as the church choir. Faith York, friend and church music director, wrote a wonderful new song for the occasion, capturing his spirit in “Better Together.”
Much of the humor was provided by Jere DeWaters, Steve’s friend of 50 years and bandmate in The Wicked Good Band. Tim Sample spoke extemporaneously of his friendship and collaboration with Steve for many years. They played together and coauthored a book, Maine Curiosities. Old friends and church and family members rounded out the shortest two hour ceremony ever. Member Greg Sferes contributed his warm thoughts about his friend. Near the conclusion Jere led the song Pennies from Heaven, which he and Steve often performed at funerals.
A wonderful video by Ted Haider, captured many moments in Steve’s life, especially those at the church. The video, a large collection of photos, and a longer description of the service are available at Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church website and Facebook page.
